The Syrian government says that rebels attacked the town of Al-Numan on Saturday in which the army said it killed two terrorists. It is not clear how the army lost control of the town, which it controlled for three weeks.

“After the attack, the Syrian Arab Air Force and Russian Su-25s were able to strike Al-Numan and destroy several terrorist vehicles,” a Syrian army spokesperson, Brigadier General Ali Tlassin told RT.

Norman Solomon, an analyst from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told RT that the town’s use of helicopters was a major weakness of Assad forces.

“The most significant vulnerability of Al-Numan [to Russian attack] would be that there are several helicopters in the area and that those helicopters would be exposed to Russian air cover,” Solomon said.

The US Central Command says Russian warplanes carried out about 17 sorties on Saturday against a “modest group” of anti-Assad rebels in and around Eastern Ghouta, which also includes an air base that the US military supports.
